I cried this week (and more low fodmap updates)

I cried this weekend

Because I wanted to have a normal Saturday night. I wanted to order takeout and have a treat and watch a movie. Instead, I had a Zevia no calorie carbonated drink and went to bed early. Oh, and cried.

My low fodmap diet is actually going really well. I weighed myself and had a really great experience of seeing that I’d lost quite a bit. I also just feel better. My clothes fit better. I can feel and see that there is less inflammation and bloating in my body. I feel better every day.

Here’s a quick breakdown of what I eat typically!

Breakfast: two hard boiled eggs and a sliced tomato

Lunch: chicken chilli with lentils, peppers, diced tomatoes, chives

Dinner: lean steak usually top sirloin and mixed veggies usually bell peppers, carrots, half cup broccoli, and chives for flavour

Snacks: grapes, banana

My go to Starbucks drink has become a cafe latte with lactose free milk. And I usually have this 2-3 times a week

A few of the difficult swaps for me have been giving up sugary snacks and diet pop, as well as my usual Starbucks drinks that have added sugars.

Some of my new favourite swaps are

Smart Sweets!

Lilly’s chocolate!

Zevia!

These have definitely made things easier for me to stick to. Some issues I’ve had with diets in the past is that I feel way to restricted and I end up cheating. But smart swaps have helped me to stay accountable no cheating! So, I am sticking to this hard core until Thanksgiving weekend and then I will indulge and allow myself to enjoy all foods. I will for sure document my Thanksgiving trip to Winnipeg and post my yummy food. The countdown is on!

FODMAP update! #1

I started my fodmap/SIBO journey on Monday!

My new naturopath and I are working too eliminate my SIBO symptoms and issues by starting a SIBO diet or low FODMAP diet. For those of you who don’t know what SIBO means:

“Small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) is a serious condition affecting the small intestine. It occurs when bacteria that normally grow in other parts of the gut start growing in the small intestine. That causes pain”

This bacteria overgrowth in my intestines causes me a lot of issues with pain, bloating, and irregulaty. The I flammtion in my intestines puts unnecessary pressure on my uterus also making my endo symptoms a lot worse. Inflammation in general also makes symptoms of endo worse so lessening that is going to help overall also!

The week before I went all out. I ate everything I love and crave all week long in anticipation of this change. I totally binged our on sugary foods and all things Asian food (sushi and Thai are my loves) as the low fodmap diet eliminates a lot of things high is carbs, sugar, and dairy. Needless to say I felt gross but my cravings were out of my system for my start date on Monday!

So to start the week off right I did I big grocery run on Sunday getting all things SIBO/LOW FODMAP compatible. I stocked up on salmon, lean steaks, eggs, and tons of fruit and veggies.

I’m super happy to report that I feel way less bloated, and have had improvement on stomach issue already. AND as a bonus I’ve lost 5 pounds in 5 days pretty crazy!

A few tips for anyone on this fodmap/SIBO journey:

First, there is a lot of conflicting information out there on what foods you can and can’t eat. When in doubt make an educated guess or contact your doctor. Second, YOU CAN HAVE STARBUCKS. Guys this is huge for me. Lactose is an issue for me so I stick to lactose free milk lates. No sugar, no sweeteners just the lactose free milk and espresso. I don’t drink it everyday because limiting the lactose free milk is important, but it’s a killer treat once in awhile. Last but not least, the cravings are really hard but you can do it! Curb cravings with sweet fruits like grapes, and treat yourself with a diet pop sometimes!

So that’s it, it’s been 5 days and it’s going well. I will report back with more info soon and give you guys a list of my meals! I am trying to keep this diet going until thanksgiving weekend so hopefully by then I’m feeling even better and losing more weight.

Talk soon,

FODMAP SCHMODMAP

I started working with a new naturopath this week. She and I are working to get things back on track with my health starting from the inside! I’m on a new health journey focusing on eliminating inflammation in body which will work to starve my endo and hopefully keep me fairly pain free! I can’t wait to share parts of this new journey and new way of eating. I’ll also be taking supplements and doing a round of antibiotics to help reset my system. I’ve tried everything else so I’m really hopeful that this new approach will work. Stay tuned!
